SIM card registration going well

The Department of Information and Communications Technology yesterday expressed confidence that it remains “on track” to have 110 million Filipinos register their SIM cards before the 26 April deadline.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy reported that over 20 million SIM card users have so far registered one month since the release of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the SIM (subscribers’ identity module) Card Registration Act.

“With the population of 110 million, I think if we’re able to register like 20 million per month, so we still have a period of three months — February, March, April,” Uy said.

“Three more months, so that’s 60… about 80 million, I think… we are on track so far,” he added during a Palace briefing on Tuesday.

The law, he said, gives DICT the option to extend the registration for 120 days after the July deadline.

Unregistered SIM cards after the deadline will be deactivated.

The DICT said there are a total of 168,977,773 million smartphone subscribers nationwide as of 15 January.
