Forest land encroachers arrested

Operatives from the National Bureau of Investigation recently apprehended seven individuals for unauthorized encroachment into forest land in Palompon, Leyte.

The NBI-Environmental Crime Division identified the suspects as Christian David Calo Madrona, Milven Gonzaga Cardello, Domingo Borinaga Bulahan, Sunny Boy Merced Isidto, Bryan Joseph Magallanes, Jonathan Cabo Calo,and Gina Labor Quimbo.

They were brought for inquest for violation of Section 78 in relation to Section 20 of Presidential Decree 705 otherwise known as the “Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines.”

The operation stemmed from a complaint claiming the existence of a poultry farm inside a parcel of land classified as “timberland/ forest land” in Barangay Lat-osan.

NBI-EnCD identified the subject poultry as “Zachary Farm” through several surveillance operations as verification made with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region VIII revealed that no permits were issued to any entities or individuals in the said area.

On 17 January 2023, NBI-EnCD operatives proceeded to the target area, which resulted in the arrest of the seven suspects for occupying an area declared to be forest land.
