DPWH backs post-pandemic open spaces

Malaluan said that there are ongoing infrastructure works along the lakeshore

The Department of Public Works and Highways on Monday stressed that it is backing the newly-signed Joint Administrative Order which seeks to improve the quality of open spaces in the country.

The order seeks to create more public parks and open spaces for the enhancement of the physical and mental health and well-being of Filipinos in an inter-agency effort between the Department of Health, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Transportation, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Human Settlements and Urban Settlements, Philippine Commission on Women, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the DPWH.

The DPWH said that it is tasked with providing pedestrian access to parks and open spaces, as well as in designating lanes for bikers and efficient public transport near the concerned areas.

Reading a letter from Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH National Capital Region director Loreta Malaluan said in a ceremonial signing ceremony at Taguig City on Monday gave positive insights on the measure, which they believe is a step-up from the height of the health crisis.

“Social restrictions took a great toll on everyone’s physical and psychological well-being, emphasizing the need for more parks and open public spaces over the country. Safe and accessible green spaces are deemed necessary in the new normal as it can be a way for people to naturalluy cope with stress while allowing for social distancing,” Bonoan’s letter said.

Meantime, Malaluan said that there are ongoing infrastructure works along the lakeshore and while not specifically mentioned, there is indeed a road work along the shores of Laguna de Bay which involves a 43.6 kilometer expressway from Taguig City to Los Baños, Laguna.

“DPWH is committed in providing safe, healthy and accessible public spaces as mandated in our joint administrative order,” Malaluan said.
