VP Sara seeks more DepEd employees’ benefits

Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday disclosed that the Department of Education is now reaching out to the Office of the President to provide additional benefits to the teaching and non-teaching personnel of the agency.

Duterte — who also sits as Education secretary — stressed that DepEd will focus on the benefits for teachers, growth of learners and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of school infrastructures under her term.

“We will focus on the teachers, learners, and our school infrastructures,” said Duterte during the Aklan’s Ten Outstanding Mentors awarding ceremonies at the Augusto B. Legaspi Memorial Sports and Cultural Complex in Kalibo, Aklan.

She also said that there was an ongoing commitment between the DepEd and the Government Service Insurance System for a monthly updating on the deliverables for the implementation of benefits for the teaching and non-teaching personnel.

The Vice President said that DepEd is also currently reaching out to the Department of Health to ensure that DepEd employees enjoy free health checkups.

“Our conversation with the Department of Health had positive results as they are very welcoming and truly receptive about, is the elimination of the cost of the checkup of the teachers in their P5,000 allowance,” Duterte said.

“We have asked for it and we will continue our dialogue with the Department of Health to make teachers’ checkup free” she added.

Duterte also said the Education department is currently reviewing the curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 10 and Grades 11 to 12 to ensure that senior high school graduates are immediately employable by the industries.

“We always say that basic education is mandatory. Our learners at the Department of Education, once they graduate, even if they no longer go to college, they can already work,” said the Vice President.
