Gov’t on guard vs weakening ‘Neneng’

The government is ready for tropical depression "Neneng," President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. assured the public on Friday, saying that relief goods are already being prepositioned.

"The key to all of this is to watch it very closely because storms today have new features," Marcos said in a mix of English and Filpino in an interview after the 8th Balik Scientist Program Convention in Pasay City.

"They develop quickly so we need to be totally on guard. So that's what we are doing," he added. "It (Neneng) looks a little stronger than the previous one (Maymay)."

As of 11 a.m. on Friday, Neneng slightly weakened while moving west-southwestward over the Philippine Sea.

Maymay has affected 6,323 families or around 22,681 persons residing in Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Authorities reported one casualty following the onslaught of "Maymay" in Cagayan Valley.

"Neneng" slightly weakened yesterday but still brought rains over Batanes, Cagayan, Apayao, and Kalinga on Saturday.

In its weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the passage of "Neneng" on Sunday will also bring moderate to heavy rains over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.

Light to moderate, at times heavy, rains will prevail over the rest of the Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region, it added.

"Neneng," last tracked 835 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, is forecast to continue moving west-southwestward before turning westward Saturday early morning.

PAGASA said the tropical cyclone will maintain its heading until it makes landfall or may pass very close to the Babuyan Islands or Batanes on Sunday.

Afterward, 'Neneng' will move generally west-northwestward and may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday.
