This was an event that made me proud to be Filipino.
When the newly-founded Philippine Heritage Society held its first ball recently, I wore my best modern Filipiniana gown and headed to the Manila Hotel's Fiesta Pavilion to show support for local arts and culture.
Entering the venue, I noticed the authentic production values of the set. I felt transported to elegant Old Manila. Credit goes to event stylist Floral Fairy, which used locally-sourced materials like anahaw, sampaguita and capiz shells.
Following a red-carpet reception was the main event, the highlights of which were: a heritage waltz number to the music of "Tanda de Valse" composed by Jose "Pitong" Ledesma, choreographed by Dalah Pia, and performed by PHS members and their partners; the awards ceremony that recognized proponents of local design, service, dance, publishing, and music; and the "Harana sa Rampa" fashion show.
The show featured creations of some of the country's most renowned designers, worn by prominent personalities who glided down the runway as the LyrOPERA singers rendered kundiman classics like "Maalaala Mo Kaya."
I loved the entire production — seeing how vintage Filipiniana can be reimagined in many ways.
The Manila Hotel served a feast of native dishes as the LyrOPERA artists and Philippine Tenors serenaded the guests.
PHS founder Sherwin Sozon wrapped up the program with a ceremonial toast with cofounders Tess Castro and Nathan de Leon, PHS committee chairperson and dear friend Mache Torres Ackerman.
All in all, the event was a smashing success. Hats off to PHS and everyone involved in the ball. The richness and beauty of Philippine arts and culture unfolded with drama and character — thanks to this wonderful community of supporters and artists.
It was an immersive experience that evoked the different expressions of Filipino talent and craftsmanship.
