Ormoc City in Leyte successfully merged 28 of its barangays into three and renamed one barangay, as Ormocanons voted in favor of the measures in a plebiscite mounted by the Commission on Elections on Saturday, 8 October.

In a press release, the Commission on Elections reported 89.34% "Yes" and 10.08% "No" votes to ratify the City's Ordinance No. 052, series of 2021.

This will effectively create what they call "super barangays", with Barangays 1 to 8, 12, 13, 15, 17, 23, and 27 merging into Barangay South,  Barangays 9 to 11, 16, 18, 25, and 28 into Barangay East, and Barangays 14, 19 to 22, 24 and 26 into Barangay West.

Barangay District 29 will, in turn, be renamed Barangay North.

Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez in a video statement expressed appreciation to the people who made the plebiscite and merger happen.

"Time will tell that this will be a very good move that will lead to better services to the barangay," Torres-Gomez said.
