Grocery prices surge in holiday runup

Prices of grocery items used for Noche Buena this early have shown tremendous price increases, while consumers should brace for another round of price surges towards Christmas, as 10 manufacturers sent their intentions to the Department of Trade and Industry to increase price tags brought about by the weakening peso in the previous days, making raw material prices to spike.

During the inspection of DTI-Consumer Protection Group chief, Atty. Ruth Castelo on Wednesday in Fishermall, Puregold and Robinson's supermarket in Malabon, her team, and the members of the media discovered that these grocery stores have already implemented price increases on Noche Buena items such as hams, mayonnaise, and cheese.

Price increases for a known mayonnaise brand surged from P20 to P50; Christmas hams also posted an increase from P20 to P45, and all-purpose creams have raised up to P15.
