Puregold continues to embrace a greener and more sustainable shopping experience for its consumers with #WalastikDays.
Walking its talk that "recycling is good, but not generating waste is even better," Puregold encourages consumers to take serious steps in reducing carbon footprint by lessening the use of single plastic consumption.
Based on a 2021 report by Our World in Data, a third of all plastics in the ocean is from the Philippines. Not only does this affect the local economy in terms of its fishing, shipping, and tourism industries, it also presents a serious problem for the environment.
"Puregold's goal is to be a mindful company that reuses, recycles, and reduces whatever resources are available; and encourages its customers to do the same," said Puregold president Vincent Co.
Puregold aims for its loyal customers to switch to eco bags which are more environmentally- friendly and cost-efficient.
Last 11 July, Puregold implemented #WalangPlastik Mondays at all of its stores in the National Capital Region. The supermarket is giving a one-peso cashback for every eco bag used by Perks and Tindahan Ni Aling Puring members, who can earn up to P5 in savings for every transaction.
This campaign saved more than 110,000 plastic bags in NCR just a month after it was launched.
Following #WalastikMondays' tremendous acceptance among shoppers, Puregold expanded it into #WalastikDays wherein 400 of its supermarket branches continue to observe the #WalangPlastik days on Mondays and Wednesdays nationwide.
Almost half of Puregold stores have either discontinued the use of single-use plastic bags or transitioned to more sustainable materials such as recycled carton boxes or eco bags.
"Today's customers are more aware and they're always looking for ways on how to reduce their use of plastics and make their shopping sustainable," Co said.
Avoiding the use of single-use plastics while grocery shopping is a small step in sustainable shopping. Puregold hopes it will gain traction so more Filipinos will bring their own bags not only on Mondays and Wednesdays but every day of the week.
These "baby steps" in decreasing plastic pollution in the country mark the start of a conscious and eco-friendly lifestyle for Filipinos.
