Freddie Mercury, cat lover

Though the Rami Malek starrer biopic did not further elaborate on this fact, it is true that Freddie Mercury love cats as much as he did music.

The Queen frontman was given his first pair of cats by his girlfriend Mary Austin in the 70s. The cats, named Tom and Jerry, were surely well taken cared of even if the couple was not around.

"Mary would hold Tom and Jerry in turn up to the receiver to listen to Freddie talking. This continued throughout the years with succeeding feline occupants of his houses," Peter Freestone said in the memoir Freddie Mercury: An Intimate Memoir by the Man Who Knew Him Best.

Mercury's love for cats intensified. He reportedly devoted separate bedrooms for Tom and Jerry in his London mansion. He even dedicated his 1985 solo album, Mr. Bad Guy, to them.

"This album is dedicated to my cat Jerry — also Tom, Oscar, and Tiffany, and all the cat lovers across the universe — screw everybody else!" Mercury wrote in the album's back cover credits.

When Queen recorded the music video for "These Are the Days of Our Lives," a track from the band's Innuendo album, Mercury wore a custom-made vest with images of each of his cats. "Delilah," one of the many songs from the album, is named after his other cat Delilah.

Mercury had a total of 10 cats, the other eight are named Tiffany, Dorothy, Goliath, Lily, Miko, Oscar, Romeo, and Delilah. All were adopted from shelter except Tiffany, the only pedigree of the lot, who is a gift from Austin.

When not writing music, Mercury found joy in rescuing cats from Blue Cross, a registered charity in England and Wales and in Scotland.

It is said that at least five of the cats were still alive when he passed away on 24 November 1991. They all went under the care of Austin as part of Mercury's estate.
