University of Santo Tomas (UST) recently unveiled its newest tiger statue and block letters at the Plaza Mayor of its main campus in España, Manila on 9 August.

The upgraded tiger statue now made of resin stands at eight feet tall, the actual size of a Bengal tiger. It was first introduced as the university’s official mascot during the UAAP’s Season 1992-1993 based on the idea of athletic director Felicitas Francisco.

The campus tiger, now featured in a pouncing position, depicts the qualities that the university conveyed during the pandemic: Vitality and agility.

A new set of UST’s block letters has also been revealed alongside the tiger statue.

A lively cheerdance welcomed the new students for this academic year.

“These letters represent the university’s tradition of excellence for having nurtured saints, martyrs, heroes, leaders in various fields connecting the past 411 years of existence to the current and future generations of Thomasians,” Rev. Fr. Louie Coronel, O.P., UST’s secretary General said.

A commemorative stone marker engraved with the university’s logo has also been added at the campus.

The new versions of the tiger and block letters mark UST’s efforts in expansion. Its campuses in General Santos and Santa Rosa, Laguna have been ongoing.

The crowning glory of España, Manila has opened its doors to another academic year of excellence after years of modified online learning.
