Fidel V. Ramos, 12th Phl president, dies of Covid complications

Fidel V. Ramos, the country’s 12th president and a key player in the original Edsa Revolution, died on 31 July of complications arising from Covid-19, according to Daily Tribune sources.

He was 94.

Ramos was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1950.

He was a member of the Philippines’ 20th Battalion Combat Team of the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK) that fought in the Korean War.

On 22 February 1986, he was acting AFP Chief of Staff when he joined then Defense Sec. Juan Ponce Enrile in withdrawing support from then President Ferdinand E. Marcos that led to the Edsa “People Power” Revolt.

He ran for president in 1992 and won by a slim margin.

His presidency weathered a power crisis and achieved economic growth and stability for the Philippines.
