Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III disputed the report of IBON Foundation that the government only created 81,000 jobs from 2017 to 2018, saying it cannot be compared to the employment data the agency submitted last year.
“Hindi comparable yung statistics ng IBON. Yung aming naibigay na employment [data] for year 2018 ay 810,000 (The IBON statistics are not comparable to the employment data of 810,000 which we submitted),” Bello told Super Radyo dzBB in an interview.
IBON Foundation said the number of employed Filipinos increased by only 162,000 from 41 million in 2016 to 41.2 million in the 2018 according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. This carries the annual job creation to only 81,000 in the period from 2017 to 2018 — the lowest level of jobs created among post-Marcos administrations, the research group said.
Bello pointed out employment rate in the country has increased by 2.9 percent since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in 2016.
