In a bid to revolutionize the television viewing experience in the country, GMA New Media, Inc. and PLDT-Smart Communications, Inc. signed an agreement seen boosting further the network’s digital transformation.
According to GMA Network chairman and chief executive officer Felipe L. Gozon, the partnership is a clear statement that the media giant is “welcoming disruption and embracing digital with open arms.”
“By riding the wave of disruption with PLDT and Smart as partners, we will not only upgrade the quality of content we are producing but we are also setting the stage for a new age of digital television,” GMA Network chairman and chief executive officer Felipe L. Gozon stated.
The technology, content and distribution agreement will modernize the broadcaster’s business in digital age through GMA New Media, GMA Network’s wholly-owned subsidiary operating as its digital media, technology arm and future-proofing agent.
“As we transform our business from being a legacy telco into the premier and most trusted digital enabler in the country, this partnership will enable us to power GMA’s digital pivot and help deliver to our millions of fixed and wireless subscribers GMA 7’s unqiue and compelling content, as well as exciting new digital experiences to more Filipino families,” PLDT and Smart chairman and chief executive officer Manuel V. Pangilinan said.
GMA has previously taken a step into digitalization in 2017 with a partnership with key social media players Facebook and Youtube which allowed viewers official access to their programs. The television network then said that the move is to address “millennial video viewing habits.”
It was met with success as their Youtube channel hit 1.986 billion views in the first half of the year it was launched. Revenues were valued at $543,114.
