Christmas comes but once a year. But if the hundreds of regulars to The Peninsula Manila’s annual Christmas Concert at The Pen musical extravaganza at The Lobby had their way, they would wish that Christmas was celebrated in the customary Peninsula style every day of the year.

The 35th anniversary of Christmas Concert at the Pen is on 9 December headlined by Hamilton star Christine Allado, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the UST Singers

Christmas Concert at The Pen is a heritage production of The Peninsula Manila along with its partners SSI Group, Inc., Citibank and Philippine Tatler and in cooperation with co-sponsors the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Lexus Philippines.

The annual concert, perhaps one of the most enduring holiday traditions in Metro Manila, doubles as a fundraiser for the hotel’s Hope for the Philippines advocacy that continues to benefit the educational and livelihood projects of the families living in The Peninsula-Gawad Kalinga Village in Tanauan, Leyte. It will take place on Sunday, 9 December, with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under guest conductor Maestro Ruggero Barbieri striking up music at 5 p.m. at the lobby.

The 2018 line-up stars Christine Allado, who has guest starred with Andrea Bocelli in his Cinema World Tour in Europe and Asia and is currently in Hamilton: An American Musical in London’s West End playing the dual role of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds and covering the lead Eliza Schuyler.

Also featured is one of the Philippines’ most sought-after opera singers and Aliw Hall of Fame for Best Female Classical Performer, soprano Rachelle Gerodias, together with tenor Arman Ferrer, a classical singer and a musical theater actor. His performance in the musical Binondo: A Tsinoy Musical earned him an Aliw Awards nomination for 2017 Best Male Actor in a Musical.

One of the world’s best choirs, the University of Santo Tomas Singers, the only two-time winner of the Luciano Pavarotti Choir of the World trophy prize (1995 and 2010) at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfodd in Wales, United Kingdom, will also be performing.

Other guest artists are Benjamin Angeles who will perform the Marimba Rhapsodic Fantasie and the Pundaquit Virtuosi, a string orchestra established by Coke Bolipata that is composed of children of fisherfolk and farmers from the local community of San Antonio, Zambales.

“Our holiday musical program offers an opportunity for the public to enjoy music of the festive season by some of the world’s greatest composers like Vivaldi, Beethoven, Gounod, Rossini, Verdi, Bizet and Tchaikovsky,” says The Peninsula Manila general manager Mark J. Choon. Freddie Santos is the concert director.

There will be a P2,200 consumable fee (inclusive of taxes) with selections from a festive season merienda menu. Table reservations for parties of 10 at The Lobby are also accepted at P30,000 (inclusive of taxes) that comes with a set festive merienda menu for 10 and two bottles of Moët & Chandon Champagne. Booking dates are until 8 December.
