‘Dirty’ execs face charges

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday warned it would sue mayors and barangay chairmen who are not implementing the laws on proper waste management in their localities.

“We should file cases against barangay captains and mayors who are not implementing RA 9003,” DILG undersecretary Martin Diño said in a radio interview.

RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates mayors and village leaders to establish a materials recovery facility in every barangay or locality.

“That is the reason why this month, I am just waiting for the reports to come in so that we can start filing the appropriate charges,” he said.

According to Diño, local executives found disobeying the law will be held accountable for negligence and might also face the administrative sanction of suspension or removal from office.

“We are already preparing and we will make sure that mayors and barangay captains who fail to implement the law will be held liable and accountable for their actions,” he added.
