Transportation officials and the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) on Thursday inaugurated the country’s first and only container barge terminal, dubbed the Cavite Gateway Terminal (CGT).
Constructed by the ICTSI, in coordination with the Department of Transportation and the Philippine Ports Authority, the terminal allows for the trans-shipment of cargo from international ports in Manila to Cavite via barges and roll-on roll-off (RoRo) vessels.
By moving cargo and people out of roads and into the waterways, the CGT will decongest traffic in major road arteries and offer a faster, more cost-effective access to the Cavite market.
President Duterte led the inauguration and witnessed the ceremonial loading of a container to a RoRo barge bound for Manila, along with Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, ICTSI Chairman Enrique Razon, ICTSI Senior Vice President Christian Gonzales and officials from the government and private sector.
“I assure everyone, in line with our Build Build Build Program, this administration will continue to pursue the timely implementation of crucial projects that will uplift the lives of our countrymen. May this terminal serve as a model for all similar port infrastructure projects in the country. Together, let us walk hand-in-hand as we lay down the physical foundations of a better life for every Filipino,” Duterte said.
