Even before the much-ballyhooed transfer of Regine Velasquez-Alcasid to ABS-CBN, it had always been her dream to work with Sharon Cuneta, who is currently with the Kapamilya Network.
As it turns out, the feeling was mutual as the Megastar had also been very vocal about wanting to do a project with Asia’s Songbird. As far back as last August, an ecstatic Sharon hinted about recruiting Regine to ABS-CBN on social media when she urged the latter to take care of unfinished business (presumably with her then network, GMA) so they could start “tumbling” together.
So, it comes as no surprise that Sharon agreed to be Regine’s guest in her upcoming “Regine…at the Movies” concert series scheduled for this month at the New Frontier Theater (formerly Kia Theater) in Cubao, Quezon City.
“I said it would be a great honor if you can sing with me at my concert on 24 November, Ate Shawie,” Regine told members of the entertainment media during the concert’s recent press conference.
While the concert is not one of her large-venue concert extravaganzas, Mega did not think twice about saying yes even though she’s already scheduled to do a show the day after.
“I’m very touched that she decided to be with me in my show because she loves me and will instead fly to Hong Kong the next day for her own engagement there.”
Because the theme of “Regine…at the Movies” concert is the singer’s love for the movies, her repertoire will consist of songs that became famous on the big screen. It’s no coincidence that she’s dressed up in the concert poster as Holly Golightly, the iconic character portrayed by the late, great Audrey Hepburn in the classic romantic comedy, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
“I will be doing ‘Moon River’ from Breakfast at Tiffany’s as part of a tribute to composer Henry Mancini. Some songs will be from James Bond movies. Titanic of course will be part of my repertoire as well as songs from my own movies,” Regine revealed.
Also included in Regine’s set list are songs from the well-loved animated features of Disney and Pixar, songs from the massively popular movie Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and the hits of Barbra Streisand as featured in her movies like Funny Girl, The Way We Were and A Star Is Born.
Regine has also not ruled out the possibility of her performing the songs by Lady Gaga in the latest remake of A Star Is Born.
As for her special number with Ate Shawie, Regine says they will do a medley of songs from the former’s movies, something she has always dreamed of doing.
Sharon sang the theme song of most of her movies so expect to hear snippets of songs like “Dear Heart,” “P.S. I Love You,” “To Love Again,” “Bituing Walang Ningning” and maybe even “Kahit Konting Pagtingin” at Regine’s concert.
And while Regine says Sharon’s “cameo” is just a taste of more collaborations to come between the two, “Regine…at the Movies” also features two other special guests: Piolo Pascual on 17 November and Daniel Padilla on 25 November.
“I have a different guest with each performance so it’s a different show each time with three different repertoires for this particular series. I’m excited,” she noted.
“Regine…at the Movies” is directed by Paolo Valenciano with musical direction by Raul Mitra.
