The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) should be abolished and replaced with another agency wielding powers commensurate with its big responsibilities, former MMDA chairman Joey Lina said yesterday.
Lina said the MMDA at present lacks the authority to effectively carry out its mandate that affects millions of Metro Manila residents.
The former senator tagged the MMDA as a “weak agency” during a media forum in Malate, Manila. He said the MMDA is a failure in solving the garbage and traffic mess in the metropolis.
He said MMDA’s weakness as a government entity surfaced when it lost a case before the Supreme Court (SC) against Bel-Air Subdivision when it tried to open its roads to traffic.
The SC ruled the MMDA has no police power to undertake the forcible opening of a private road network such as Bel-Air’s.
