Changing the name of Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) to Lapu-Lapu-Cebu International Airport (LCIA) has been proposed in House Bill (HB) 8170 by 10 Cebuano representatives.
Rep. Raul del Mar (North District, Cebu City) in his sponsorship bill said it is the right time to honor Datu Lapu-Lapu as the country’s first hero who repelled the Spanish invader Ferdinand Magellan.
“It is prudent and beneficial to keep the name ‘Cebu’ in the airport name and the name of the authority that manages it. Cebu is better known in the world historically, economically and culturally,” Del Mar added.
MCIA is presently managed by the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) which was created by Republic Act (RA) 6958 of 1990.
Recently, President Rodrigo Duterte signed a proclamation declaring 27 April as a national holiday in honor of the Battle of Mactan.
The date is now dubbed as Adlaw ni Lapu-Lapu (Lapu-Lapu Day).
