Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said she is not advocating the importation of meat products at reduced tariff rates.
Arroyo said here are more substantive drivers of inflation cited in the Philippines Statistics Authority survey which reported a new high at 5.7 percent last July.
She held a meeting with members of Samahang ng Industriya atAgrikultura (SINAG) led by Rosendo So yesterday afternoon to clarify her position on the tarrification of meat products.
Arroyo also called for help from the multi-industry alliance SINAG to support the government in lowering and stabilizing price and to ease the inflation.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said last Monday that Arroyo met the administration’s economic managers and discussed possible reduction of taxes on meat and fish imports.
