Magnolia Ian Sangalang crashed with a wrist injury and is not expected to return any time soon.
Hotshots head coach Chito Victolero broke the news, expressing the sense of urgency to have his big man back as they enter the crucial stretch of the elimination round of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup.
The Hotshots are sitting at the fifth spot with Globalport with a 4-4 win-loss slate, making their next three games very crucial.
“The initial assessment was four to six weeks. But there’s no definite time yet,” said Victolero following a massive 111-89 win over Talk ‘N Text late Wednesday.
The victory snapped the Hotshots’ three-game losing skein, but Sangalang’s injury is a major blow to their frontcourt since veteran Marc Pingris is also out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will sideline him for the rest of the year.
“We want Ian to be fully recovered,” he said. “Hopefully he can join us after the eliminations. But as of now, there’s no definite time.”
With Sangalang and Pingris out, backup big man Rodney Brodial broke out of his shell with a career-best 16 points, eight rebounds and a block while limiting KaTropa reinforcement Joshua Smith to just 12 points.
