BOCAUE, Bulacan – Gunner Janine Pontejos served as the silver lining to Perlas Pilipinas’ gloomy campaign as she claimed the gold medal in the women’s shootout contest of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup Tuesday at the Philippine Arena.

Pontejos, a three-time Most Valuable Player for Centro Escolar University in the WNCAA, didn’t disappoint as she tallied 14 points, including eight straight long balls and a pair of money balls in the last rack, to beat Alexandra Stolyar of Russia.

Pontejos and Stolyar actually ended up tied at 14, but the Filipina had a better time of 41.86 seconds compared to the 49.9 seconds by the Russian.

Marin Hrvoje of Croatia clinched the bronze with 11 points while Maksim Dybivskii settled for fourth with eight markers.

Pontejos, who punched a ticket to the finals after posting 12 points in 22 seconds in the eliminations last Monday, lifted the Philippines following a winless campaign in Pool D.

The Nationals opened their bid with an 11-21 setback to The Netherlands followed by a 10-21 loss to Germany, a 17-21 heart-breaker to Spain and a 15-18 defeat to Hungary.

Pontejos’ best game was when she finished with 13 points, including Perlas’ first eight points, in a sorry setback to heavyweight Spain.
