SPEAKER Pantaleon Alvarez on Tuesday urged newly-elected barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials in his home province of Davao del Norte to support the senatorial slate of the ruling party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP), in the coming mid-term elections.

“It is very important for us to choose the candidates whom we can count on to support the programs of President Duterte and enable him to realize the changes he wants to bring to our country,” Alvarez said before administering the oath of office to some 3,000 newly-elected barangay and SK officials in the province at the New Tagum City Hall during the 120th Independence Day celebration.

Alvarez urged local officials to support the candidacy of PDP Representatives Monsour del Rosario of Makati City, Dakila Carlo Cua of Quirino, Sajid Mangudadatu of Maguindanao, and Karlo Nograles of Davao City.

He also called for support to the candidacy of Special Assistant to the President Bong Go, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, and Presidential Adviser Francis Tolentino.

Alvarez said there are already 24 names being considered for the PDP senatorial lineup.

However, in an ambush interview with the local media after the event, Alvarez said that President Duterte would have the final say on who would be the administration’s senatorial candidates.

Alvarez made another appeal to the barangay and SK officials of the province during the event.

“Let us unite to reform the politics in Davao del Norte to bring progress to our province, not just in District 1 but also in District 2,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez said true independence includes the freedom to choose the officials who can truly serve the people and bring progress to the province.

According to Alvarez, politics in the province had been controlled by one or two influential and moneyed families for a very long time.

Alvarez said that to bring real change and development in the province the barangay and SK officials should help educate the people to choose the right and qualified leaders in the 2019 local elections.
