Fariñas clan loses strategist

The Fariñas clan lost its foremost election and political strategist with the death of Laoag Vice Mayor Michael Fariñas in a freak car crash Wednesday evening.
Fariñas lost control of his black Mercedes Benz along the curve of a bypass road at Barangay 55-C Vira in Laoag City around 6 p.m. The car rammed a concrete barrier and careened into a rice field.
The vice mayor was credited for his efforts to make Laoag the “most livable, most business-friendly city.”
Fariñas, 52, a nephew of House Majority Leader, Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas, was taken to the Gov. Roque Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The vice mayor’s companion, his security aide, SPO2 Melchor Geronimo, was injured and was treated for trauma to his spine.
He started his political career as a village chief before getting elected as mayor of Laoag for three terms until 2010 when he ran for vice mayor.
Fariñas was the first grandchild of the late Federico Fariñas, founder of Fariñas Transit. He was regarded as the clan’s political strategist, having managed his uncles’ election campaigns, including that of the House leader.
